Trump Excludes South Africa from 2026 G20
He pointed to alleged mistreatment of white farmers and a disagreement over the group’s rotating leadership transfer as reasons for the exclusion.
The South African government described the decision as “regrettable” and insisted it was “based on misinformation and distortions.”
This announcement comes after the 2025 G20 summit in Johannesburg, the first summit ever held on African soil, which proceeded despite a boycott from Washington.
Leaders from other major economies endorsed a declaration emphasizing climate action, debt relief for less wealthy nations, and tackling global inequality—key priorities advanced by Pretoria during its presidency.
The summit concluded with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa striking the gavel after rejecting Washington’s suggestion that a US envoy handle the ceremonial leadership handover.
Pretoria later passed the chair to Washington in a modest ceremony on Tuesday.
In a post on Truth Social on Wednesday, Trump criticized South Africa for declining to hand over G20 leadership to a US Embassy representative who was present at the closing event on Sunday.
“Therefore, at my direction, South Africa will NOT be receiving an invitation to the 2026 G20, which will be hosted in the Great City of Miami, Florida next year,” Trump stated.
The former president reiterated longstanding claims that the South African government permits “horrific” abuses against “Afrikaners, and other descendants of Dutch, French, and German settlers,” asserting that “they are killing white people, and randomly allowing their farms to be taken from them.”
